E.L.F. xx Jen Atkin Makeup Review

Updated: Jul 1, 2021

This month there was a brand new makeup collection launched onto the market and that only means one thing... It's review time. Yes, I am going to be talking about the E.L.F. xx Jen Atkin limited edition get real beauty edit. I am extremely excited about this collection. Primarily because I am a huge fan of Jen Atkin. If you have read some of my previous blog posts I do mention her here and there. For those who are not familiar with Jen Atkin, She is a celebrity hairstylist and owner of QUAI ( hair product line) and Mane Addicts ( blog/ hair community). She has a huge presence in the beauty industry and I really admire her. This E.L.F. collaboration is her official step into the world of makeup. Her beauty edit encases the everyday essentials. It includes; a full face palette, eye makeup kit, lipstick duo, and a facial mist. Pricing for her collection ranges from $8- $20. You can purchase individual products and pre-made kits on E.L.F.'s website or from Ulta Beauty. This collection is intended to provide everything you need to recreate Jen's signature look, whether is an everyday look or a smokey nighttime look.

For an over view of the collection and to see product swatches check out this Tik Tok Video. Make sure to scroll through to the end. I will be sharing another video of me creating a look using the products.

The main component of this collection is the Let's E.L.F.ing do it palette. This is your all-in-one face and eye palette. It contains 4 neutral, matte shadows, bronzer, blush, and highlight. The packaging is plastic, but it's extremely thick and sturdy and has a snap closure. It also has a simplistic, sleek design that encases Jen's style. The pan sizes in this palette are a really good size, you get a lot of product. They definitely did not scale down the size to fit everything into one palette. Now let's get into the fun part, how the product performs. I was really pleased with this palette. The powder has a velvety, smooth feel and our pigmented. Sometimes with matte shadows they can be chalky and patchy, these were the complete opposite. They went on smoothly and blended seamlessly. The shade range is the perfect mix of neutrals to create everyday looks or make it more dramatic. I was extremely impressed with the bronzer in this palette, it was the perfect neutral shade. It gives the skin just the right amount of warmth, while still being able to get a contoured effect. The Blush was a pretty shade and has the tiniest hint of shimmer. It applied nicely and the shimmer wasn't too chunky or powdery looking. My only dislike from this palette was the highlight. It wore powdery on my skin, which I am personally not a fan of.

Overall I think this is a great palette. You get an all-in-one face palette with a good quality product for $14. This is great for my beauty lovers on a budget. I also love the versatility of this product. It keeps things simple but, still allows you to create multiple looks.

The Eyes Up Here kit retails for $12 and contains your eyeliner (black), hair and brow pomade, and a dual ended eyebrow brush. The brush is only available in this kit but you can individually purchase the eyeliner and pomade.

The eyeliner is super creamy and pigmented. It was really easy to apply and did not tug or skip at all on my eyelid. I used the angled side of the brush that came in the kit to blend the liner. The brush is a synthetic angle brush for your eyebrows or you can use it for liner, like in my case. Got the job done, very average, nothing special. The liner blended easily to create a more messy, smokey feel. You can also easily layer and build upon it without it moving around the product you just put on. This eyeliner needs to be set with a powder or else it will transfer and smear on your eyelid. Make sure to set it with a powder and you shouldn't have any issues.

The hair and Brow pomade I was looking forward to because it has an interesting applicator. My excitement for this product did fizzle out quickly. This type of brush didn't work for my brows. I found it challenging to get the product in the hairs and it felt like it just took a lot of extra effort. I prefer a regular eyebrow spoolie. However, the applicator brush did work well to grab fly away hairs, so that was a plus. The pomade itself was average. It compared to other brow gels on the market and kept everything in place.

I picked up two shades of the XXtra Lip Duo. You can purchase all three shades in a kit for $20 or individually for $8. They come in three of Jen's go to shades; a haute red, the perfect pink, and a brown nude. I tried out the shades "Red-y to Go" and "Se.l.f. Made Pink". The liner end was creamy, smooth, and easy to use. It lined my lips without smudging at all. The lipstick end also has the same creamy, smooth properties and was easy to apply. The color of the two shades ( you can see in my swatch video) was really nice. I usually don't wear lipstick that often, especially a bold lip, but I love the red shade. It's a warm tone orange-red and I just think it looks so good, especially on more olive skin tones. "Se.l.f. Made Pink" is the ideal "your lip color but better" shade. Now there is one problem with this lipstick, they are incredibly drying. After a few minutes of wear, my lips felt super dry and product started to settle in fine lines. I recommend staying hydrated and prepping your lips well before wearing these.

Overall, I think this is a solid collection. I haven't used E.L.F products in years, so this was a nice way to reintroduce myself. This collection has the perfect amount of products in my opinion. All you need is your foundation and concealer and you have everything you need for a full face of makeup. You can also easily travel around with these products in a small makeup bag and you're good to go. There are a few things I would personally tweak to make this collection that much better, but it's minor. You are getting good quality makeup that apply's/wears well and has an affordable price point.

Have you tried the E.L.F. xx Jen Atkin Collab? Do you love Jen Atkin as much as I do? Let me know in the comments.
